North to Alaska: Cruising the Inside Passage, Monday, February 4, 6:30 PM

Last week, Tom Hissong, Retired Education Manager for the Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm gave a wonderful talk with what some described as “ National Geographic’’ quality photos, about his passage North to Alaska, at the Fairborn Community Library, 1 E. Main Street, Fairborn, 45324

When naturalist John Muir first visited Glacier Bay in Alaska in 1879 no words could describe the beauty of the landscape that he saw.  The sheer magnificence of the snow-covered mountains and gleaming icy glaciers that surrounded him helped John see that he truly was in a special place of sanctuary.

Tom Hissong, had the opportunity of a lifetime this past summer to visit Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve on a cruise in Alaska’s spectacular Inside Passage.  Tom traveled and worked for nine weeks as Guest Alaskan Onboard Naturalist on Holland America’s MS Noordam cruise ship. Starting at the Port of Vancouver Tom traveled north to Alaska through some of the most beautiful waterway passages in the world.  The cruise offered the opportunity to stop at several Alaskan ports including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Haines, and Seward.

Monday evening Tom invited all of us to explore in the splendor of his experiences through a colorful PowerPoint.  With a full house, many of us were taking away with Tom to the very lands he was inspired by. Photographs of a rich diversity of wildlife including Bald Eagles, Humpback and Killer Whales, Moose, Alaskan Brown Bear, Black Bear, Sea Otters, and more.

A big thank you to Tom Hissong, Karen Tracy and all who attended.

Here’s what’s coming next month at the Sense of Place Program.  Don’t miss your opportunity to learn and explore.
